Turning Your Data Into Insights

July 2017 Webcast Q&A Wrap-Up

 Presented by Virginia Thompson

Vice-President – Product Management, Integration Point

Virginia spoke about Integration Point Global Trade Visibility (GTV) solution, which allows companies instant real-time visibility into global import and export activity. By providing a single, consolidated view of all declaration data, GTV facilitates “Big Data” analysis to identify savings, manage compliance risks and improve supply chain performance.

Q: Where is the broker information pulling from?

A: Most brokers have internal systems that can generate an electronic feed of data that represents the same basic data that they transmit to Customs in a given country plus additional information (such as SKU numbers, business unit, etc.). Exactly what information is in that system varies from broker to broker and is dependent upon a given importer's SOP's with the broker.  If they are unable to generate the data in an electronic (EDI) file but can pull it out in a spreadsheet format, we can upload Excel files into GTV as well.

Q: Does this tool map HTS to ECCN numbers for the U.S.?

A: GTV, per se, does not display the mapping, but there are reports that show HS Numbers and ECCN's on transactions so that you can see your own history of correlative declarations and possible mis-declarations. In addition, the per-country links on the heat maps will allow you to jump into our Global Trade Content database where we do have HS Number to ECN mapping information when it is published by a given country source.

Q: How you find and fix errors of input data from brokers?

A: There are several reports that we did not have time on the webcast to demo that allow you to have visibility to the data errors that have been received from brokers.  During implementation, you work with our team to decide which type of errors (field specific) you want to be set as hard vs. soft errors. These reports give you visibility into how many of each category and sub-category of the hard and soft errors have been received, and the ability to mark them as “Dismissed” to indicate you have reviewed the errors. You also have the ability to extract the complete details of the errors to work offline with your broker to correct the data. We would be happy to show you a complete demo of the functionality to explain how it works in greater detail.

Q: Can new reports be created in GTV by the user from scratch? Are there only canned reports?

A: GTV is a solution designed to be implemented and maintainable for a given company quickly and efficiently, so while there are over 500 reports to choose from in GTV Import and GTV Export (each), they are not customizable. We are, however, always interested in hearing clients' ideas for new reports that we had not thought of that we could add in a future release. We also have other reporting solutions at Integration Point that do support much more customizable reporting capabilities, and we would be happy to discuss those options with you if you are interested.

Q: My company has the FTZ and GC module. Can the data in those modules be used for this module rather than using Broker data?

A: In general, data from other Integration Point modules that is transactional in nature (FTZ, Import or Export Management, Entry Verification) can be used to populate GTV, but you have to assess if it represents the full amount of all your imports or exports you are doing in/out of a given country. Global Classification, however, is more of a "Maintenance" module, so its data does not lend itself as effectively to use in GTV. We would be happy to sit down and look more specifically at your modules and usage to identify what the possibilities are. We do have other clients who are taking data from another Integration Point solution to populate part of their GTV database.
